General Ayurveda Diet Recommendations for Pitta People

If your Pitta dosha is aggravated you can include some salads or raw vegetables in your lunch, especially during warm seasons. You should avoid oily and hot spiced foods. Take your meals at fixed times, preferably 7-8am breakfast, 12-1pm lunch, 6-7pm dinner to keep your hunger under control. Don’t overeat – your stomach should be filled 1/2 with food, 1/4 with liquid and 1/4 left empty for proper digestion. Friendly, calm and relaxed atmosphere while eating is a must for correct enzyme secretion and absorption of nutrients. Emotions experienced while eating are multiplied and stay with you for the rest of the day.

If your Pitta dosha is dominating you should eat more Pitta pacifying foods and less of the Pitta aggravating ones from the lists below. Additionally, you should increase proportion of sweet, bitter and astringent tastes, whereas decrease sour, salty and pungent tastes in your diet.

Pacifying and Aggravating Foods for Pitta Dosha as per Ayurvedic Diet


Pitta pacifying vegetables: sweet and bitter vegetables, artichoke, asparagus, cooked beets, bitter melon, broccoli, brussels sprouts, cabbage, cooked carrots, cauliflower, celery, coriander, cucumber, dandelion greens, fennel anise, green beans, Jerusalem artichoke, kale, leafy greens, cooked leeks, lettuce, mushrooms, okra, black olives, cooked onions, parsley, parsnips, peas, sweet peppers, sweet and white potatoes, prickly pear leaves, pumpkin, cooked radishes, rutabaga, spaghetti squash, not spicy sprouts, winter and summer squash, taro root, wheat grass sprouts, zucchini.
In moderation: raw carrots, watercress.

Pitta aggravating vegetables: pungent vegetables, beet greens, raw beetroot, burdock root, daikon radish, garlic, green chilies, horseradish, raw leeks, mustard greens, green olives, raw onions, hot peppers, prickly pear fruit, raw radishes, raw spinach, tomatoes, turnip greens, turnips.
Acceptable occasionally: fresh corn, eggplant, kohlrabi, cooked spinach.


Pitta pacifying legumes: adzuki beans, black beans, black-eyed peas, chick peas, kidney beans, brown and red lentils, lima beans, moong beans, moong dal, navy beans, dried peas, pinto beans, soy beans, soy cheese, soy milk, split peas, tempeh, tofu, white beans.
In moderation: soy flour, soy powder.

Pitta aggravating legumes: miso, soy sauce, soy meat, yellow pigeon peas, black gram.


Pitta pacifying grains: amaranth, barley, dry cereal, couscous, crackers, Durham flour, granola, oat bran, cooked oats, pancakes, pasta, quinoa, basmati rice, white rice, wild rice, rice cakes, wheat meat, spelt, Essene sprouted wheat bread, tapioca, wheat, wheat bran.

Pitta aggravating grains: bread made with yeast, buckwheat, corn, millet, dry oats, brown rice, rye.
Acceptable occasionally: muesli, polenta.


Pitta pacifying seeds: flax, halva, buttered not salted popcorn, psyllium (ispaghula), sunflower
In moderation: pumpkin seeds.

Pitta aggravating seeds: chia, sesame, tahini.


Pitta pacifying nuts: soaked and peeled almonds, chironji, coconut.

Pitta aggravating nuts: unsoaked and unpeeled almonds, black walnuts, brazil nuts, cashews, filberts, hazelnuts, macadamia, peanuts, pecans, pine nuts, pistachios, walnuts.


Pitta pacifying oils: internally and externally – sunflower oil, clarified butter, canola oil, olive oil, soy oil, flax seed oil, primrose oil, walnut oil.
Externally only – coconut oil, avocado oil.

Pitta aggravating oils: almond oil, apricot oil, corn oil, safflower oil, sesame oil.


Pitta pacifying fruits: sweet fruit – sweet apples, apple sauce, sweet apricots, avocado, sweet berries, sweet cherries, coconut, dates, figs, raisins red and purple grapes, ripe melons, sweet oranges, ripe pears, sweet plums, pomegranates, prunes, watermelon.
In moderation: limes, sweet ripe mangoes, papaya, sweet pineapple, strawberries.

Pitta aggravating fruits: sour fruit – sour apples, sour apricots, sour berries, sour cherries, sour cranberries, sour mango, sour plums, sour pineapple, grapefruit, sour oranges, lemons, green mangoes, green grapes, bananas, peaches, persimmons, rhubarb, tamarind.
Acceptable occasionally: kiwi.


Pitta pacifying dairy: unsalted butter, soft and unsalted cheese, not-aged cheese, cottage cheese, cow’s milk, clarified butter, goat’s milk, soft and unsalted goat’s cheese, ice cream, freshly made and diluted yogurt (not sour).

Pitta aggravating dairy: salted butter, buttermilk, hard cheese, aged cheese, sour cream, plain yogurt, yogurt with fruit, cold yogurt.


Pitta pacifying spices: fresh basil, cinnamon, coriander, cumin, dill, fennel, fresh ginger, mint, peppermint, saffron, spearmint, turmeric, wintergreen.
In moderation: black pepper, caraway, cardamom, neem leaves, orange peel, parsley, tarragon, vanilla.

Pitta aggravating spices: ajowan, almond extract, anise, asafoetida, dry basil, bay leaf, cayenne, cloves, fenugreek, garlic, dry ginger, mace, marjoram, mustard seeds, nutmeg, oregano, paprika, long pepper, poppy seeds, rosemary, sage, salt, savoury, star anise, thyme.


Pitta pacifying sweeteners: barley malt, fructose, fruit juice concentrates, maple syrup, rice syrup, dried or fresh sugar cane juice, turbinado.

Acceptable occasionally: fresh honey (less than 3 months old).

Pitta pacifying beverages: almond milk, aloe vera juice, apple juice, apricot juice, sweet berry juice, carob, sweet cherry juice, cool dairy drinks, alternative grain coffee for example wheat (NOT normal caffeine coffee), grape juice, mango juice, mixed vegetable juice, peach nectar, pear juice, pomegranate juice, prune juice, rice milk, soy milk, vegetable bouillon.
In moderation: green tea, miso broth, sweet orange juice.

Pitta aggravating beverages: apple cider, sour berry juice, black tea, caffeinated beverages, carbonated drinks, carrot juice, sour cherry juice, chocolate, chocolate milk, coffee, cranberry juice, grapefruit juice, ice tea, ice cold drinks, lemonade, papaya juice, pineapple juice, tomato juice, sour juices.


Pitta pacifying condiments: sweet mango chutney, coriander leaves.
In moderation: black pepper, dulse, hijiki algae, kombu kelp, lime, seaweed, tamari sauce.

Pitta aggravating condiments: chili pepper, chocolate, spicy mango chutney, gomashio, horseradish, kelp, tomato sauce, mustard, lemon, lime pickle, mango pickle, pickles, too much salt, scallions, soy sauce, vinegar.
