1. Utsaha – Enthusiasm / Cheerfulness

6 Sadhaka Tattvas - 6 Principles Assuring Success on the Yoga Path

To have success at anything we need to put a good feeling in it. The importance of this point should never be underestimated. Probably this is the most important principle of all the 6. Our emotions are like the link between what we think and what we actually manage to achieve. Our emotions stir the right kind of hormones in us and those around us. Our emotions either give us and others the energy or completely deplete us from it. Enthusiastic and cheerful people tend to have favourable outcomes. Yoga Sutras of Patanjali, the most important text about yoga, also give the Santosha – Contentment as one of the most important points in the moral code of an aspiring yogi.

2. Sahasa – Courage

Being brave in spiritual practice is required for two aspects of the reality unfolding in front of us:
a. The first one is the ability to face our own weaknesses, flaws and negativity.
b. The other one is the daring of our soul to travel to untold lands of existence.

a. Firstly we need to consider that when we work on our self-growth, we tend to discover the darker aspects about ourselves. It might be quite scary to see those deeper thoughts and tendencies in us. Commonly we tend to blame the outer world and other people for our miseries, completely rejecting that inner side of us responsible for self-sabotage and pain. Realising that to the greater extent we ourselves are responsible for what happens to us can be quite a shocking exposure and a very challenging thing to accept. Taking liability for ourselves and our lives is not something we were taught from childhood. We need great courage to take things into our own hands, to always look within for solutions of problems and boldly take what is unfolding through our practice. It requires a lot of self-love and fearlessness to embrace our true face.

b. Secondly, we need great courage to acknowledge ourselves as a unified part of all existence. After the initial purification of our psyche and removing therefore the obstacles that were dividing us from the rest of life, we are able to venture deeply into mysterious realms of the spiritual side of life. Deeper states of meditation are literally the travels of our soul to other realms of the Universe. The mysterious, abstract and nameless although thrilling, intoxicating and invigorating from one side, can also be very strange, perplexing and bewildering. It is very daring indeed to embark upon the journey to the complete unknown.

3. Dhairya – Patience / Perseverance

Going deep in learning any science and achieving milestones in any practice requires time and dedication. There are no instant magic recipes to mastery of any art. Any progress and growth come from patience and perseverance in going in one direction.

4. Tattvagnyana – Knowledge about Practice

Knowing the principles and understanding the methodology of a practice one is taking up is essential for safety and advancement. Practicing yoga with full comprehension and awareness ensures self-development and quick progress.

5. Nischaya – Determination

When obstacles from within and without arise it is very important to continue keeping to the practice. It is those low moments or disturbing situations that all the more require determination and discipline. From one side it is actually the regularity and practice itself that helps us overcome any difficulties. From the other side inconsistency causes stagnation or even regression on the path.

6. Janasanga Parityaga – Avoiding Company of Wrong People

There are very different people, lifestyles and levels of openness in consciousness. There are those who refuse to take responsibility for themselves, blame the outer world for anything that happens and utter words of negative self-fulfilling prophecies. There are people with low morals and standards. For yoga practitioners it is best keeping away from such negative influence of those who only complain, criticise, lack faith in progress and are unable to see goodness of life.

For a person who wants to establish strongly on the yoga path, go deep in practice and thrive in life it is very helpful to keep to the company of those with similar interests and aspirations. There are people who want to improve and grow, who take responsibility for their thoughts, words and actions, who take care of themselves through healthy lifestyle and diet. In other words, there are those who take charge of their lives in a positive and constructive manner. Spending time, speaking and doing things with such exemplary persons give us productive, encouraging and inspiring high-level energy. It’s good to surround oneself with those on the same level as we are. And it is a great gift of life if we can be in the company of higher evolved beings, because their energy itself takes us spiritually upward.
